Graying Teachers: A Report on State Pension Systems and School District Early Retirement Incentives, by Frank V. Auriemma, Bruce S. Cooper, Stuart C. Smith. Foreword by Richard D. Miller, 1992. (394 kb)
This report presents a complete state-by-state overview of the retirement programs available to America's teachers. In addition, case studies of early retirement incentive plans in six districts provide some useful information about how these plans work: amounts spent and saved, numbers of teachers eligible to retire early versus those who take the option, and the costs of replacing the teachers who retired.

At-Risk Families and Schools: Becoming Partners, by Lynn Balster Liontos, 1992. (780 kb)
Help for educators in meeting the challenge of involving parents and extended families of at-risk children is offered in this report. Twenty-eight chapters provide information to help educators communicate with low-income, nonwhite, and non-English-speaking parents.

Principals: How to Train, Recruit, Select, Induct, and Evaluate Leaders for America's Schools, by Mark E. Anderson, 1991. (496 kb)
What training is needed to be an effective school leader? Whom do school districts prefer to hire? How are principals introduced to their jobs? What type of feedback on performance do they need and receive? Why do some principals succeed while others fail? Seeking answers to these questions, Mark E. Anderson combines knowledge from both print and practice in a lucid examination of the training, recruitment, selection, induction, and evaluation of America's principals.

Voices From the Classroom, by David J. Flinders, 1989. (256 kb)
"David Flinders' work captures the teacher's voice that often is absent from conversations about policy and the ways policy can enhance practice. His lessons from the classroom comprise a valuable resource for policy makers or students of education who want to understand more about the 'black box' of classroom practice, the ways in which context matters, and the reasons why policy initiatives often disappoint...." - from the Foreword, by Milbrey McLaughlin
